Depression can lead to things like weight gain, divorce, alcoholism and drug addiction, and very sadly, even suicide. It’s a very serious disorder that needs to be treated seriously. If you even think you may be depressed you should see a doctor. In addition, you should find that the tips in this article may help to rid yourself of this debilitating disorder.

One way to combat depression is to help yourself feel good. It sounds simple, but when life has gotten to the point that you find it difficult to get out of bed and get dressed in the morning, no matter how difficult or tiring it may be, hop in that shower and pick out a flattering outfit to wear for the day. Looking good will help you to feel good as well.

One way to treat depression is with prescription medication. Every year new ones come out too, so if you tried one years ago there are many alternatives now. Most of them work by attempting to restore the chemical balance in your brain as they believe depression is caused by a chemical imbalance.

Be sure you are getting enough exercise every day. Studies have shown that people who get approximately thirty minutes of exercise a day respond better to depression treatment. In fact, exercise can be as powerful as a pharmaceutical anti-depressant. Simply taking the stairs or parking your car a little further from the store can benefit your physical and mental health.

In order to fight against depression, it is very important to always think positive. Negative thinking plays a big role in our state of mind and it tends to affect the way we deal with people. By having a positive mindset people expect great things which in return opens lots of great opportunities.

Keeping in mind that it is you who can take control of your thoughts is a great way to deal with depression. The first step is to take “depressed” from your vocabulary. Depressed is a word with a very negative connotation when it comes to describing your feelings and thoughts. Switch to a phrase, such as “low mood” for describing your feelings and to think more positively.

Know that you are not crazy. Depression is a real illness and should be afforded the same respect as any other disease. It is your body telling you that something is wrong, whether it is a chemical imbalance in the brain or unresolved emotions. Depression is your body’s way of telling you that it is becoming overwhelmed and needs help.

When and if you are feeling suicidal you should do everything in your power to remind you that this is all in your head. If you even begin to entertain the idea of killing yourself you should immediately contact someone that you trust and ask them to come and talk you down.

Depression may well be a serious affliction that millions of people have to suffer through on a daily basis. But you do not have to suffer indefinitely. As soon as you read these tips and decide to put them into action, you’re no longer destined to years of misery; you’re in recovery.

I think I had existential depression for a few weeks and now I’m wondering if I’m clinically depressed. I get angry at basically anything and I want to cry almost constantly. I haven’t contemplated suicide, but I do feel like my life is useless. Any advice?

What are the signs that someone has depression and not just your average “blues” that we all get at some points. Also, if an individual does have depression, is there anyway to rid themselves of it without medication/therapy. If i do have it, i want to get rid of it myself.
